Patrick Astwood is originally a self-taught artist who has been painting on and off 15 years. Beginning with innocent experimentation with collage in the mid-eighties, he graduated through various forms of symbolism and abstract expressionism, to Hopper like pieces that characterise his current style of painting.
The artist has a deep interest in composition, colour and form and he chooses his subject matter carefully. His paintings convey a strong sense of space and perspective, with a powerful emphasis on the individuals place within his or her physical environment. Patrick believes that there is strong symbolism and deep spiritual meaning in the relationship between the human and the landscape. He describes his work as quietly contemplative.
